I love a Southern Christmas

Today I enjoyed some sun and a long walk with the baby; it was 65 degrees in the afternoon! I love this state. Ok, so maybe this state has a kidnapping Santa Claus and a drunk Christmas float driver. But I love the weather.

Meanwhile, my mom calls me on her cell while walking the beach in Georgia. She was laughing at the few kids determined to swim in the ocean although it's a bit cool this time of year. It reminded me of one of my fondest Christmas memories: my grandparents in Georgia once heated up their pool for a Christmas swim.

A white Christmas is nice, but sometimes a green one is more fun!

Fear My Wrath

I think the warm and fuzzy Smokey the Bear campaign has sent the wrong message. It makes it look like we're getting soft on fire prevention. I propose a new public service announcement: "Fear the Wrath of the Firefighters' Wives."

Thinking of passing out on the bed with a lit cigarette? Or starting a meth lab in your basement? After our husbands risk their necks to save your worthless life, we will hunt you down and maul you like a pack of of *real* grizzly bears. Yeah, we know where you live. We heard your address on the pager when the call went out.

Bring on the karaoke

The nice thing about having a baby is that you have an excuse to talk and sing to yourself all day long. The problem is that I have trouble turning off the mommy babble once I'm out in public. At the post office yesterday I caught myself singing aloud as I stamped my Christmas cards. There was an older black gentleman next to me at the table, but I was too filled with the holiday spirit to be embarrassed, so I kept ad-libbing "little girl" to some random melody that popped into my head. When I walked out the door, I realized that the tune was the theme song to "Sanford and Son". Ugh. Strange how the subconcious mind works, isn't it?

Embarrasing Highlights of an Orchestra Concert

Right after the intermission of our Christmas concert last week, a horn player fell backwards off the risers and bent his horn. Somehow he did not hurt himself badly. He went on to finish the rest of the concert. And I thought these great "play-through-the-pain"moments only happened in sports!

And then there was my own embarrasing moment. During dress rehersal, I poked another bassist in the arse. It was an accident, I swear. With the piano and harp on stage for the first time, we were squashed together and lacking in personal bowing space. I was moving the bow vigorously to get some serious sound out of my instrument, so it probably hurt a little.

Who knew that playing in the symphony could be so hazzardous?!?

In Concert Tonight

We're having our Christmas concert tonight, which also means that new daddy and daughter will be together alone for the longest time on record yet. He has watched her several times for a few hours, and she loves it when daddy sings bass; Rudolf the Red-Nosed Reindeer is her favorite. So the worst thing that can happen is what happened last time: coming home to find her dressed in green polka dot pants and a navy and pink striped shirt.
